Record Collection #31

– Kamahl #1 –

Kamahl is an Australian pop-culture icon. Born in Malaysia to Sri Lankan Tamil parents, he began releasing his albums of smooth singing in the 1960s. His music has always been of the ‘easy listening’ variety… tunes to soothe your nanna with… and his dress sense alternating between corduroy flares with giant 70s pointed collared shirts, and traditional Sri Lankan tops and kaftans. Despite this, Kamahl has always commanded respect due to his easy going, friendly demeanour and self deprecating sense of humour. He knows exactly where he stands in the scheme of modern Australian entertainment, and is the first to step up and share the joke with any audience. He walks the tightrope between cringe-worthy attention seeking and self parody perfectly.

It is rare to flick through a stack of records in an Australian op-shop and not come across a Kamahl album or two. They were so common that for years, I virtually looked straight through them, but eventually, I was charmed. “Why are people so unkind?”
